Why I am not concerned with the Rabbit R1 being on Android

The Rabbit R1 AI device has sparked a lot of discussions and raised concerns among individuals due to its reliance on the Android operating system and app-based functionality. It’s been discovered that the R1 is running one app (it’s own) on a customized version of AOSP (Android Open Source Project). This has led many to say that the R1 is no better than your smartphone and you should just have an app on your smartphone. However, there are compelling reasons why these aspects should not be viewed as drawbacks.

Firstly, Android is a well-established and widely used operating system, used by billions of devices globally. I never expected Rabbit to make their own OS as that is very time intensive (read: costly) and if you aren’t specifically leveraging custom hardware, what is the point of spending all that time. The fact that the R1 uses Android is a boon to me, as the hackability and upgradability are net positives. I wouldn’t be surprised to see custom AOSP builds from the community once R1 shipments really pick up this summer.

(Note: I am scheduled to get mine in June/July so I am basing my thoughts off of available reviews today.)

Secondly, the R1’s dedicated battery and data SIM offer significant advantages. By separating the R1 from a smartphone’s battery and data plan, users can avoid draining their smartphone’s battery and enjoy uninterrupted use of the R1. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who rely on their smartphones for various tasks throughout the day, like myself. There is so much that a smartphone is expected to do these days and having a dedicated device makes it easier to keep the phone in the pocket and distractions away. (Can you hear my ADHD talking yet?)

Drawing parallels to my early days of the iPhone 3G and the iPod, the Rabbit R1 AI device echoes a similar concept. It is a dedicated tool designed for a specific purpose, much like the iPod was for music. This distinction allows users to focus on the R1’s capabilities without the distractions and interruptions that often accompany smartphones, such as notifications. While I don’t think this generation of device could completely make you leave your phone or watch at home…is that the point? I’ve always viewed this device as a “life companion” which means it lives alongside everything else in your life.

Overall, the Rabbit R1 AI device holds great promise as a transformative tool in human-technology interaction. Its Android-based platform provides versatility and customization options, while its dedicated battery and data SIM ensure seamless and uninterrupted use.
